At the "Plastics between crisis and opportunity" conference, organized by CERC, we discussed the challenges and future directions of the plastics and recycling industry in Romania. For PetStar, the national leader in high-quality rPET production, these challenges are very real. It is not just about technology or willingness, but about the need for a stable legislative framework that supports the use of recycled materials sourced from locally collected waste.
Mirela Drăgoi, President of PetStar, emphasized the importance of rewarding producers who use recycled material sourced in Romania:
“Producers who use recycled material derived from national waste should be rewarded — or at the very least, not taxed the same as those who use recycled material from outside the EU. These producers contribute directly to meeting national targets and deserve recognition.”
PetStar's proposal: fiscal incentives for producers who exceed the minimum usage threshold imposed by the EU. Only through collaboration between industry, authorities, and consumers can we build a real circular economy in Romania.
